Annapurna Base Camp Trek — Complete 2025 Guide
Blog

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek leads into one of the most awe-inspiring natural environments on Earth — a glacial amphitheatre completely encircled by twelve peaks above 6,000 metres, including Annapurna I at 8,091 metres, the world's tenth highest mountain. In eleven days from Pokhara, this trek passes through rhododendron forests, Gurung village culture, and the world-famous Poon Hill sunrise before entering the narrow gorge that opens into the Annapurna Sanctuary. It is rated moderate, accessible to fit beginners, and delivers a quality of mountain experience that rivals anything in the Himalayas.

The Annapurna Sanctuary

The Sanctuary is what makes the ABC trek genuinely extraordinary. Unlike most trekking destinations where you view mountains from a distance, the Sanctuary places you inside them. The approach gorge between Machhapuchhare (6,993 m) and Hiunchuli (6,441 m) is only a few hundred metres wide — the walls rise directly from the trail. When the gorge opens at approximately 3,700 metres, the full amphitheatre is revealed: Annapurna I's south face filling the sky directly ahead, Machhapuchhare's twin summit to the right, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, and Tent Peak completing the circle. The scale is overwhelming in a way that is genuinely difficult to prepare for.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Days 1-2: Pokhara — Tikhedhunga — Ghorepani (2,860 m)

Drive from Pokhara to Nayapul and begin trekking through Birethanti along the Modi Khola. Day 2 involves the famous 3,200-step stone staircase through rhododendron forest to Ghorepani — demanding but spectacular. Sunset views over Dhaulagiri from the village are the evening reward.

Day 3: Poon Hill Sunrise — Chhomrong (2,170 m)

Pre-dawn hike to Poon Hill (3,210 m) for the Annapurna-Dhaulagiri sunrise. Return to Ghorepani for breakfast, then descend through old-growth rhododendron to Tadapani and continue to the large Gurung village of Chhomrong — the last major village before the Sanctuary.

Days 4-5: Chhomrong — Bamboo — Deurali (3,230 m)

Steep descent into the Modi Khola gorge, cross the river, and enter the narrowing valley. Dense subtropical forest gives way to alpine scrub. Bamboo to Deurali passes through Dovan and Himalaya Hotel as the vegetation thins and Machhapuchhare begins to dominate the skyline above.

Day 6: The Sanctuary — Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m)

The final push through moraine and glacial debris as the valley opens into the great amphitheatre. The moment of arrival at ABC is one of the most memorable in Himalayan trekking — suddenly surrounded by the complete ring of giants in every direction.

Days 7-9: Descent to Jhinu Danda — Pokhara

Sunrise at ABC the following morning — Annapurna I's south face igniting in tangerine, then gold — before the long descent back through the Sanctuary. At Jhinu Danda, natural hot springs on the Modi Khola riverbank provide the perfect muscular recovery before returning to Pokhara.

The Hot Springs at Jhinu Danda

The hot springs are located a twenty-minute walk below Jhinu Danda village, directly on the riverbank. They are fed by geothermal activity, rich in minerals, and maintained as a community facility. Soaking in the hot pools after eight days of trekking, with Annapurna South visible above the valley, is one of the most satisfying experiences in Nepal. Entry is free with a small tip to the caretaker appreciated.

Best Season

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are both excellent. The rhododendron season (February-April) makes the forest between Tikhedhunga and Ghorepani one of Nepal's most vivid spectacles. Autumn delivers the clearest Sanctuary views. The gorge between Dovan and ABC carries genuine avalanche risk in winter (January-March) — our guides monitor conditions and adjust timing accordingly.

Permits and Cost

The ABC trek requires the ACAP permit (NPR 3,000) and TIMS card (NPR 2,000). A complete eleven-day guided package from Pokhara starts from USD 950 per person, including guide, porter, permits, transport, and full-board accommodation. This is one of the best value-for-experience treks in Nepal.
